Program History
Howard University Hospital (HUH) has served the Washington, DC community with substance use disorder treatment for over 40 years. HUH’s Drug Abuse Institute provided detoxification and outpatient services for drug and alcohol use disorders since the 1970’s. Subsequently, the Howard University Collaborative Alcohol Research Center was established in 1997 to stimulate, strengthen, and facilitate multidisciplinary research and collaboration with the goal of reducing alcohol-related morbidity and mortality among minority populations with an emphasis on African Americans.
The Addiction Medicine Fellowship was founded in 2020 in response to the local and national demand for increased expertise in the treatment of substance use disorders.
The fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). It is a one-year interdisciplinary program designed to educate and train fellows to prevent, recognize and provide care for persons with unhealthy substance use, substance use disorders (SUDs), and other addictive disorders.
